If someone asks, “What is mental health?”, it could be defined as the person’s psychological state when they are functioning at an acceptable level or emotional and behavioral adjustment, or could be described as the foundation of human thinking and communication skills related to learning, resilience, self-esteem, and emotional growth.

When someone has good mental health, it most likely means that they are overall well adjusted person. This person would have a normal amount of confidence, a sense of well being, and a healthy amount of positive self esteem. People with a good state of mental health should be able to handle day to day life and the ups and downs that go along with it rather smoothly. This will enable them to have healthy relationships with other people, deal with life’s challenges, and live their lives in such as way that they can reach their potential.

Aside from asking the question, “What is mental health?, we may also wish to ask what we can do to improve our state of mental health in order to lead a productive, happy life. Learn how to express your feelings and talk about them in a positive way. Makes sure to set goals in life that are realistic so you aren’t constantly letting yourself down. Learn and develop new skills. Engage in relaxing hobbies that you enjoy. Even the basic steps for achieving good physical health such as eating a healthy diet, getting adequate exercise, and getting enough sleep, go a long way towards nurturing positive mental health as well. Spending time with the people you love is also a positive way to encourage good mental health.

When a person is unable to keep a positive state of mental health, they may be suffering from a mental illness. This mental illness can affect many aspects of a person’s life, including the way they behave, think, and how they interact with those around them. People may suffer from mental health problems, which are slightly different and not as severe and life impacting as an actual mental illness. Some commonly recognized mental illnesses include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, bipolar mood disorders, and schizophrenia.

Many factors can impact a person’s mental health and contribute to the development of mental illness. Biological factors such as hormones, body chemistry, and genetics may play a role. Constantly having negative thoughts and feelings of low self esteem may also bring about mental illness. Other factors such as family issues, violence in the home, isolations, and financial problems may also result in mental illness. However, many of these factors do not mean a person will certainly suffer from mental illness, as having a supportive family and community can provide a healthy outlet and support system which can minimize the impact these factors play in their role in the development of mental illness.

When asking, “What is mental health?”, is all boils down to having a healthy self esteem and healthy ways of coping with the people and world around you.
